Description
Koko Marina is a nice place to stop on your way to the beaches on the southeast shores of Oahu. The architecture is 1980s-style nautical. There are gorgeous views from the walkway behind Zippy's. Misty clouds gather over the jagged mountains and light shimmers on the water of the marina. The boats are fun to look at. There is a movie theater and it feels great walking out amongst the coconut trees and the warm evening air when your movie is done. There are quite a few places to eat:
Kona Brewery has great live music and tiki torches at night. Greek Marina has good food. Try the Spanakopita.
There is a Starbucks, Subway sandwiches, Kozo Sushi, and a local food place called "Loco Moco" where you can get "plate lunches," which are
very greasy: meat, rice, and macaroni with mayonnaise. Good to get a
taste of local culture but only if you have time to take a nap after
eating something so heavy!
On the far end is formal, indoor Italian restaurant called
Assagio's with delicious eggplant parmigiana. The AC is a little freezing in there so bring a jacket.
Further down is Bubbies Ice Cream, where the names of the flavors are
interesting in a sleazy sort of way. On the very end is Zippy's, a
local-food diner, with a bakery where you can get Haupia Cake. You must
try Haupia (Coconut) Cake while in Hawaii and this is the best place to
get it! It's light and creamy. The seating by the marina is nice at
Zippy's.
Many tourists stop at Koko Marina on their way to go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. Other wonderful spots nearby are Portlock Point and Spitting Cave.
