Description
Waioli Tea Room is where the locals go when they want somewhere pretty to meet their friends. Tucked away in magical Manoa valley, it is surrounded by red ginger plants, orchids, and a bounty of green. Dab on some Skin-So-Soft or mosquito repellent to make sure you don't get bitten while you enjoy your meal.
You can sit on the balcony or inside under fans (no AC) but I'd choose the balcony. It is like eating in the middle of a rainforest. A red cardinal bird sat and stared at me. Some of the other birds are a bit of a pest.
On weekends at lunchtime there is live music: soft Hawaiian sounds that don't intrude on the conversation.
With one-day advance notice, you can have afternoon tea here any time of day. They bring out many varieties of loose tea for you to sniff. It's fun to do in a group. Then they bring a three-tiered silver platter of scones, little delicate sandwiches, and fancy desserts. This costs $18.75 per person, $15 for children.
It's nice that a real chef makes the food here- something that's hard to find nowadays.
After you've eaten, explore Robert Louis Stevenson's grass hut, which is located on the property. It's fun to see!
Directions
From the H1 Freeway, take the University Ave exit. Continue up University Ave. It changes to Oahu Ave at one point. Keep going. At a five-way stop, turn left onto Manoa Road. Immediately you will see a sign for Waioli Tea Room on your right. Once you've turned right into the driveway, turn right again at first chance. It will lead you into the parking lot.
$9 for breakfast. I recommend the Guava Bread French Toast.
$10 for a lunch Quiche and Salad, which was very good.
