Strawberry Fields Forever...
Driving through Oxnard yesterday, I couldn't help but think that it was Strawberry Fields Forever, but sadly, not in the good sense. It was kind of like the Midwest corn fields, but less pristine. More brown on the skyline, more mishmash of industrial junk and used car lots mixed in with the agricultural junk, and not a mountain in sight. But, there are gems amongst this glary, brown-skied wasteland...and yesterday I found some!
The delightful Camarillo Ranch House is something you should not miss. The history of the Camarillo family is very interesting, and you will hear about it on the personal tour you get when you give a $5 donation. Also, the house itself is one of the loveliest Victorian houses I've ever seen, and the gardens are pretty too. It's just off the 101 Freeway, so stop in for a look if you're driving that way!
Also, Port Hueneme pier is the greatest pier- it is so unusual-looking with its black supports, and its crooked shapes! The beach there is lovely, with stormy big waves, and hundreds of gulls. Best of all, I liked how much salt there was in the air- it brought back childhood memories of beaches in Sydney. Listen to the ocean at Port Hueneme and it's bound to refresh you!
We are thinking of changing the name of our site to whatafunday.com. Why? Because, when I say lotsafunmaps.com I've noticed that people's eyes glaze over, like they'll never remember the name. Also, I was wondering if it really shows what the site is about. I'm thinking that "What a Fun Day!" is an expression that's hard to forget, and it shows what our site is all about. What parent can resist taking their child out, when they blurt out "What a FUN day!" at the end? I'd love some feedback if you could drop me a line at editor@lotsafunmaps.com. Thanks!
