Flamingo Gardens is a lush, tropical botanical garden with huge, magnificent trees and beautiful plants. Peacocks and ibis birds roam the grounds, including an all white peacock that we saw sitting atop a tree! There are many rescued animals to see, including a tortoise, bald eagle, flamingos, ibis birds, adorable otters, and alligators. Kids can hand feed the flamingos, fish, and ibis. The ibis run after you and it's very fun! The otters are in a cute enclosure and have a lot of fun swimming around it and climbing up the waterfall. Bobcats, panthers, and bears don't belong in cages- the bobcat was pacing miserably.

It's fun to watch one of the Meet the Animals talks. There is also a tram tour that introduces you to the history of the gardens and lets you see some exotic plants you might not otherwise notice while riding through a tropical paradise. Kids love to ring the giant bell by the tram. There is a house tour that is interesting. Near the house is a gorgeous lawn where you can have a picnic.
Get there right when it opens so you have the place to yourself! There is plenty of shade in the gardens which is appreciated on hot days.
The last half of December, enjoy lights in the garden at night. The decorations look pretty in the day too!
Another wonderful and colorful place for kids nearby is Young At Art Children's Museum.
After your visit, have an empanada and fresh-squeezed orange juice at Vicky Bakery at 2889 S. University Dr- it has pretty decor.
Or, have a delicious waiter-service meal and enjoy live steel drum music at Bahama Breeze, an 11 minute drive north. There is also a Bahama Breeze 15 minutes south.
