The US Navy Seabee Museum next to the Port Hueneme base, is a very interesting, state-of-the-art museum and well worth a visit! It is also air-conditioned, so on hot days it's a relief, and entrance is free! Each room has attractive displays and tells the story of various deployments, with items collected from all over the world. There is a stuffed penguin from Antartica, a Belgian doll, a Moroccan fez, a Serbian beret, and Japanese tabi boots. I love the red glittered desert boots sent to Chief Pierce in a care package. You can see some of the things Seabees wore, such as green woolen mittens and bunny boots in Antartica.
The Seabees are the civil engineers of the navy, and you can see some of the things they've built such as timber observation towers used in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is fascinating to walk around and view everything and read the stories.
The museum displays some amazing inventions that have saved many lives, such as the MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle). You can see a NEMO (Naval Experimental Manned Observatory), which was used underwater by the Seabees.
A way this museum could be improved is if they put interactive things for little kids to touch under the displays so that parents can read the stories in peace. Anything would work: little flaps to open, buttons that make a light go on etc. There is a children's area with electronics projects, trucks, and magnets, but it would be cool if kids had something to touch while parents read the exhibits.
After, have lunch at Topper's Pizza (a five minute drive), right on the water in Channel Islands Harbor, and walk from there to Peninsula Park, which has seals and a really happy feel to it. Or play at Oxnard Beach Park (a seven minute drive) on the sea monster and pirate playground!
US Navy Seabee Museum is located at 3201 N. Ventura Rd, Port Hueneme CA 93043.
