New College of Florida is lucky to be situated on the Sarasota waterfront in the former Ringling Estate and in several high modernist I. M. Pei buildings to the east. It's gorgeous to walk along the waterfront where you can often see dolphins in the bay. The best time to come is at sunset since there is little shade. Unique in that it's a tiny (800 students) public honors college, New College of Florida is a very selective college, attracting students who are independent and passionate about performing their own research. Students receive narrative evaluations rather than letter grades, create their own majors, and most go on to graduate school. Many students become fulbright scholars. 80% of students are from Florida. Many New College of Florida students (over 50%) leave without any student loan debt because the college is affordable. There is a marine science building with tanks full of interesting sea creatures that is used to reach out to educate the local community. There is also a fine arts complex with auditorium, science complex with spectography lab and greenhouse, and an archaeology lab. Students can live on campus in five green residence halls with apartment-style suites. The student center has a theater and a game room.
A short walk to the south is the Ringling Museum and Mansion, on the same gorgeous piece of land on the bay, free for New College of Florida students to visit.
New College of Florida is located at 5800 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota FL 34243, call (941) 487-5000.The waterfront part of the campus is next door to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and there is a walkway along the water connecting the two.
