Orlando Museum of Art and Loch Haven Park
Orlando Museum of Art is in a modern building with large windows. Outside there is a fountain and an unusual set of sculptures, like people standing oddly around. Inside there is a fascinating exhibit of Peruvian and Costa Rican objects, such as jewelry, goblets, and architectural decorations, made of gold, stone, and turquoise. They are so beautiful, and from so long ago! I had never seen archaeological objects from these countries before.
The traveling exhibits can be fantastic at this museum. I saw a large exhibit by Maya Lin that were truly inspiring.
The Orlando Museum of Art is in a museum park called Loch Haven Park where you can find the excellent Orlando Science Center, which is especially nice for kids, the Orlando Fire Museum (Fri, Sat 10-4), and the Mennello Museum of American Art which contains a room of colorful folk art by Earl Cunningham which is fun to see. Outside the Mennello Museum of American Art is a modern-art sculpture garden on the lake which you can walk around for free. A bike path runs through it, plus a map showing good routes for biking around Orlando. It's a beautiful spot!
Orlando REP is an excellent local theater company in Loch Haven Park. Attend one of their performances while you're here! We saw How I Became a Pirate- which was fun, with great music! In a side room, the public are allowed to view some awesome theme park attraction sketches that were made before the rides were built.
After, have a treat at Lineage Coffee, a six minute drive south. It has big windows and a hip crowd.
Across Rollins Street from the art museum parking lot, you can walk for 1000m along Lake Estelle on a pretty path. The path winds in front of AdventHealth hospital.
