The 1921 Fort Fisher Monument is a monument on a large field by the sea. It is a column with an eagle on top. Across the road is a lovely oceanfront spot with a sea wall made of huge rocks. You can walk along a path by the sea. Continue north on the path for a minute or two and you will get to an amazing maritime forest. The twisty trees have so much atmosphere! Cross the street behind the forest and you come to Fort Fisher Historic Site. It's a wonderful place to walk the grounds. Even if it's closed, you can walk the boardwalk, climb the steps up to the cannon, and enjoy the view of little hills created as strongholds. These look like the set of Teletubbies! The views are so expansive, of fields dotted with wildflowers, and the Cape Fear River.
Back at the ocean, continue north onto the beach and you will come to some moss-covered rocks in front of the Ocean Dunes apartments. These are coquina rocks, and are the only such rocks in NC!
If you need to come in from the sun, visit the nearby NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, a large aquarium with great tanks.
Nearby, at Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal, you can catch a 35 minute car ferry ride to Southport, an adorable town on the water. I recommend visiting this town, and eating at one of the restaurants on the waterfront at Yacht Basin Drive, then walking the Marsh Walk. It's blissful!
The 1921 Fort Fisher Monument is located at Battle Acre Rd. There is a parking lot on the ocean.
