Across the street from the main parts of Balboa Park is a quieter area where you can go for a walk among roses and desert plants! It is lovely to come on a sunny day and take in the colorful atmosphere. If you come in late spring or early summer you will see the most roses. There are roses of many colors, yellow, white, pink, fuschia, purple, stripey red, orange, surrounding a blue fountain. Eucalyptus trees form the backdrop, and there are little picnic tables under willow trees. You can also see flowering magnolia trees. Kids like to climb on the roots of the trees.
Continue on and check out the Desert Garden, with its Dr. Suess-like cactus and desert trees. Quite stunning! Check out the golden barrel cactus, flowering prickly pear cactus, and the African trees. There is plenty of shade, and cute boulders scattered about. Cactus of all shapes and sizes really wow you.
After, cross the street and ride the adorable carousel! And also walk around Spanish Village, a colorful square that kids love! It has a gem museum that is fun to visit (buy a smooth rock to bring home), and a little stand where you can get delicious smoothies.
Inez Grant Parker Rose Garden and Desert Garden are located at 2125 Park Blvd, San Diego CA. You can park in the parking lots on Space Theater Way and then walk across Park Blvd to the gardens. Parking is free.
