For a place to eat, check out the downtown strip in Redwood City on Broadway. Here people stroll along past charming cafes. A good choice is Baires Bakery and Cafe, an Argentinian cafe, where you can have an empanada or maicena alfajor cookie in a large, pleasant space with big windows. Mademoiselle Colette has French pastries, in a small space. Check out the pretty architecture of the 1929 art deco Fox Theater which faces the San Mateo County History Museum (built in 1910), with Courthouse Square in between. The history museum is a really fun place for kids, with many interactive exhibits. While inside, look up at its colorful stained glass rotunda, and admire the California bear mosaic on the floor. Kids like to get frozen yogurt or boba tea outside after. It's nice to stroll around Courthouse Square in front of the museum, and return at night when everything is lit up. For a fancy Mexican restaurant with beautiful decor, check out Quinto Sol.
For another place with nice atmosphere, have a long stroll at Leo J. Ryan Park Boardwalk in Foster City.
