If you start the Lemon Grove Trail and then take a left at the fork, you can follow a fire road to the top of Cerro San Luis mountain. This hike is 0.8 miles in, and then you turn around. Cerro San Luis is a volcanic mountain, or morro- one of a string of morros that runs through San Luis Obispo. I never really like hiking fire roads because the trail itself is not very scenic. But the views when you get to the top, of the town and Bishop Peak, are lovely! In summer this trail is very dry. In winter, it can be closed because of mud. And in spring, it is green!

If, instead of turning back, you continue on, you can do a four mile loop called Rock Garden Loop, past the M which represents Mission Preparatory School.
After, have a coffee in downtown San Luis Obispo, which is near the trailhead. House of Bread on Marsh Street, which has delicious muffins, is only one minute by car, or a short walk under the freeway.
