Avalon Beach is a stunningly beautiful beach with a nice-shaped headland on its northern end and a popular ocean swimming pool on its southern end. Because it is situated across Barrenjoey Rd from Avalon Parade shops, there are usually plenty of people strolling along the beach or enjoying the views from the benches. Healthy Norfolk pines line the beach where the amber sand begins. Little rock pools on the southern end are a wonderland for kids, with all kinds of creatures living in shells stuck to the rocks. There is a small playground on the grass by the beach. You can walk on the cliff above the beach on the southern end and watch the surfers while long Pampas grasses sway in the sea breeze beside you. This is a particularly good surfing beach, which makes Avalon Beach Hostel a good choice for surfers too.
If you're hungry, cross Barrenjoey Rd to Avalon Parade and enjoy something yummy at La Banette Patisserie! Or you can't go wrong with a gelato from Chill Bar.
Often a strong wind picks up at the beach in the afternoon on all the Northern beaches. If that happens, go to the Pittwater side of the peninsula, to Clareville, and you will find a sheltered place for your kids to play.
Avalon Beach is on the ocean side of the Barrenjoey peninsula, south of Whale Beach and north of Bilgola Beach. From Barrenjoey Rd, turn into the parking lot for the beach, across the street and a little to the north of Avalon Parade.
