It's blissful to drive along Highway 1, between Oxnard and Malibu, taking in the sea air and wide open vistas. Along the way you pass Thornhill Broome Beach and then on your left there is a huge sand dune! You can park your car along the road and then climb the sand dune. The northern end has the softest sand with not as many surprise rocks in it.
Across Highway 1 on the ocean side, there are dozens of rock cairns! These look so cute silhouetted against the blue ocean! The curved beach in the distance has bright blue-green water. What an idyllic view!
Next you come to Sycamore Cove Beach.
Once in Malibu, check out the amazing El Matador State Beach with its giant rock formations and arches jutting out of the sea.
Highway 1 is an iconic California drive. The most stunning part, with vertical cliffs, is between Monterey and San Simeon, in Big Sur. It is a two hour drive, with some winding parts. At San Luis Obispo, Highway 1 turns into Highway 101, a freeway. Highway 1 reappears again at Oxnard. Although the drive between Oxnard and Malibu is beautiful, with open ocean expanses, it is not as stunning as the Big Sur drive.
The giant sand dune is located between Thornhill Broome Beach and Sycamore Cove Beach, along Highway 1 between Oxnard and Malibu. The sand dune is across the road from the water, and the rock cairns are along the water.
