Mariposa Grove is a grove of tall Sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park, one hour south of Yosemite Village. The hike among the Sequoias is almost two miles roundtrip. In summer it is a dry, dusty trail and not very appealing. The trees are incredible: thousands of years old and stretching higher than you can imagine. Sequoia trees are related to Redwoods, which are even taller. This is a popular hike. Visitors wait to get a photo of themselves next to the impressive Fallen Monarch, a tree that fell hundreds of years ago and whose roots are still preserved because Sequoias resist decay. There are many other trees with names, such as the Bachelor and Three Graces, four trees whose roots are intertwined.
Many of the trees on the trail have burned recently, which wasn't the prettiest.
It's much nicer to see these trees in late spring or early fall when it's not so dusty and hot. Sequoias that are far more beautiful, huge, and impressive than these can be found at Kings Canyon National Park, a wonderful place to visit in late spring.
There are some really nice spots in Yosemite Valley, so check them out! And drive up to Glacier Point for a stunning view of the whole valley.
Mariposa Grove is one hour south of Yosemite Village. It is at the beginning of the south entrance of the national park.
From Highway 41, enter Yosemite National Park at the South Entrance and then turn to the right- there are signs for Mariposa Grove. After two miles, the road ends at a large parking lot. This is the trailhead.
It costs $35 per car to enter Yosemite National Park and this covers seven days.
