The Grand Naniloa Hotel sits on shimmering Hilo Bay. It's nice to take a stroll along Banyan Drive, under the rows of gorgeous banyan trees, and then duck into the resort for a meal. As you walk into the lobby, the bay is framed by an attractive open-air lounge area where sweet breezes blow. You can have a drink here at the bar and listen to live Hawaiian ukulele music and harmonies on Saturday nights. Walk downstairs to the lawn, gazebo and pool area. These grounds are wonderful to walk around. You can have a drink at Hula's while listening to the live bands play, on Saturday night. It's fun, though the music is way too loud. Hula's is open for all three meals, and also on holidays. Enjoy the wonderful views from the many windows. It's lovely!

After, walk eight minutes to Coconut Island, for inspiring views. Continue on to Lilioukalani Gardens, one of the nicest spots in Hilo. Or walk in the other direction to Reed's Bay Beach Park.
For another spot with gorgeous views of the bay, eat at Hilo Bay Cafe on its big balcony. It is open for lunch or dinner, closed Sundays. There are a few items on the menu that are somewhat affordable, such as a burger $16 or fish and chips $18. Skip the chicken pot pie.
