Palisades Park makes for a gorgeous stroll! Don't be turned off at first by the huge population of homeless people. Although it's sad to see, it's worth it to walk here, because the views over the coast are so lovely! On busy days, you will be joined by plenty of tourists and should feel safe enough to walk alone (don't walk here alone at night though!). If you start where Ocean Avenue and Wilshire Blvd meet, you will have a pleasant walk all the way to the Santa Monica pier. I like to walk a loop, starting at 3rd Street Promenade, because it's a great scene over there, plus parking is not too expensive- see directions below.

Palisades Park is blessed with large grassy areas, an abundance of tall California palms, fantastic gnarled trees, cactus, and plenty of bright sunshine and ocean breezes! As you stand at one of the fences and look out, you will see that you are atop the unusual clay-red cliffs of Santa Monica, and above the Pacific Coast Highway. Watch the Mercedes and convertible sports cars whiz by, and dream of a life where you'd pull one of those babies into your own trendy beach house, like the ones you see below! Enjoy the vast yellow sands of Santa Monica Beach stretching out before you, the gorgeous mountains on your right, and the fun pier with rollercoaster and ferris wheel on your left. You couldn't ask for a more vibrant scene!
Walk over the Colorado Avenue bridge above the Pacific Coast Highway for more views, and to get to Santa Monica Pier and the great beach to the east of the pier. This is a favorite beach of mine- the ocean is clean and sand is pale! On weekends there are tons of cool people to see! Enjoy!

Lovely Santa Monica and its wide, wide beach.

Super cool pastel-colored beachhouses!

Beachhouses, situated along the 1 Highway and Santa Monica Beach, as seen from Palisades Park. Notice the beautiful, beautiful mountains!

The winding walkway, pretty lawns, and gnarled trees of Palisades Park.

Colorful Santa Monica.

Directions

Palisades Park is a walkway in a long stretch of park, located along Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.
Exit the Santa Monica 10 Freeway westbound at 4th Street. Turn right on 4th Street, left immediately on Colorado Blvd, and then right on Ocean Ave. There is metered street parking.
I like to combine this walk with a walk through 3rd Street Promenade and park for $5 a weekend day at Santa Monica Place mall, on the corner of Colorado Blvd and 2nd Street.
