Kids love the Alamance Children's Museum, 30 minutes west of Durham. It's in a modern, light-filled building that is beautiful! There are many different areas for kids to explore, including a tall netted climbing area where they can climb to the ceiling and look out at a high view! Kids can also pretend to be a dentist or doctor in the health clinic. In the building zone, they can play with huge foam blocks or go inside a rocket ship. Baby dolls and bassinets are in the pretend nursery. Little kids love rolling cars down the six-track race tracks. In Jane's cafe, they can cook their parents a meal and serve it to them on diner chairs. The train room is cute with a Thomas the Tank Engine set. The mail room is a big hit- kids can deliver letters and packages all over the children's museum. There's a cute little house with rocking chairs on the porch, and an area with huge stuffed animals to climb on. A small shopping area has veggies to buy. The most unique feature of this museum is the glass room where kids can paint on the walls! What joy!

There are also some outdoor areas to play in the morning sun. Kids can move big round pieces on a sort of giant abacus. They can sit on various benches that look like giant books: Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, nursery rhymes. A silver elephant sculpture looks welcoming. There's a caboose to check out, a sand pit, and a climbey.
After, if you have older kids (little kids won't be good in the small space), have lunch at Press Coffee and Crepes (waiter service, not counter service), in a hip historic building, where you can have some delicious savory or sweet crepes. Which kid doesn't like a nutella and banana crepe, with a glass of milk?
For a perfect day, check out the farm animals at Cedarock Park, a sixteen minute drive south.
It seems like it would be fun for kids to visit the Burlington Downtown Depot, nearby, but the day we went the woman in the visitor center said there was no caboose on the property, yet we found it behind the building! It was locked though, and we couldn't go inside. Not really worth visiting, unless your kids might like running up and down the ramp of the caboose.
