Byodo-In temple, a glorious replica of the same-named 950 year old Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, is a serene place. The stunning Koolau mountains that back it add to its majesty. The large jade-green pond that fronts it adds a glassy mirror and green green grass to the foreground of the blissful view. The vegetation all around, including many Norfolk pines, is so tropical and wonderful- it is a joy to walk around and take it all in.

The temple was built in the 1960s, the 100th anniversary of the arrival of immigrant sugar-cane workers from Japan to Hawaii. If you haven't learned much about this, watch the movie "Picture Bride," a fascinating film that reveals what life was like for these workers.
Come in the morning when the mountains are lit by the sun and their ridges are highlighted. Ring the deep-toned bell as you enter. Walk up the little path to the gazebo and small waterfall. Watch a black swam glide amongst hundreds of orange and white koi under little pond bridges and around the glassy pond.
Inside the temple is a giant golden statue. You remove your shoes before entering the temple.
Apply some mosquito repellent before you arrive as there are plenty of mosquitoes in this lush place. It's not as bad as other spots though, so you can possibly get by without it (I left with only one bite!).
This is a photographer's paradise. Definitely come in the morning when the sun will be behind you as you take photos of the temple and its mountainous backdrop.
This is the location of scenes from the TV show "Lost" during episodes that flash back to Sun's life. It is the Korean home of her powerful father, for whom her husband Jin does dubious work.
Other sites featured in "Lost" are: Spitting Cave, Kualoa Ranch, and Waimea Falls Park.
After your visit, have a refreshing swim at Lanikai Beach.

Byodo-In Temple is located at 47-200 Kahekili Hwy, Kaneohe HI 96744, in the back of the Valley of the Temples. Call (808) 239-8811. Take the Kahekili Hwy (Hwy 83) through Kaneohe. North of Kaneohe you will find the Valley of the Temples.
Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children aged 2-12, cash only.
Open 8:30-5 daily.
