Lettuce Lake Park, Tampa

Tampa, FL, USA

Lettuce Lake Park is a gorgeous nature area blessed with lush, bright trees and the Hillsborough River. The main boardwalk makes a loop to the Hillsborough River. Here, tall trees soar above you, with bright green leaves- it is wonderful! Below you plants grow in the water covering every inch- they look like lettuce, hence the name. If you're lucky you'll see an alligator pop it's head out of the lettuce. As you walk you pass a cypress swamp which is beautiful. Once you get to the river you can often see owls. Other creatures you see are turtles, big snails, snakes, and long-legged birds of all varieties.
If you aren't tugging along kids, you can extend your walk by taking the boardwalk to the lookout tower.
Even though we walked here in summer, we didn't encounter any mosquitoes! Maybe this area is not bad like the south of Florida.
There is a playground and plenty of picnic areas in huts, plus a visitor center where you can meet at 9am on Saturdays for a guided tour along the boardwalk.
After your visit, walk around the campus of USF nearby, or see an IMAX film at the Museum of Science and Industry.
22 minutes drive north, check out the live steel drum music and delicious Caribbean food at Bahama Breeze Restaurant!
