From Rue de l'Ile in the main part of old town Annecy, you can walk uphill on cobblestoned Rampe du Chateau. Rampe du Chateau is an adorable, narrow street with ivy growing on the walls, stone buildings, and lanterns. This is best done in the late afternoon or evening when it's no longer hot. Once at the top, you can check out the pretty shape of the castle. If it's open (10:30-6, closed Tues), you can go inside and look out the windows at the town below. The windows are arched, with metal bars over them, so the view is a bit blocked. There are a few sculptures inside. Really it is the walk up to the castle from the old town that is the nicest part. You can continue up to Basilique de la Visitation (open 7:15-6:30), while you're up there. It's a pretty walk.
To get back down, it's best to just walk down the same way you came up, since the other streets to get down are just busy highways.
Chateau d'Annecy is located at Pl. du Château, 74000 Annecy, France. You can walk there from the old town, via Rampe du Chateau.
Continue your walk, to Basilique de la Visitation, 11 Av. de la Visitation, 74000 Annecy, France. Open 7:15-6:30.
