The hike to the top of Squaw Peak rises 1200 ft in just 1 1/4 miles. It's a place where buff body-builder types show off their stamina. There is no shade except for some ramadas at the trailhead, so those who are hiking have to tough out some severe heat. Even in April, the best time of month for hiking, it can be extremely hot in this area.
You will see lots of saguaro cacti, green palo verde trees, and possibly some ocotillo, barrel, hedgehog, pincushion, jumping cholla, and prickly pear. Watch out for rattlesnakes and scorpions!
After your hike, you will need an ice cold drink and some luxury, so head over to Biltmore Resort and sip a cool cocktail by one of their pools surrounded by tropical flowers. Or take your kids to get an icecream cone at Biltmore Fashion Plaza nearby.
Squaw Peak Park, or Piestewa Peak, is located at 2701 E. Squaw Peak Dr, Phoeniz AZ 85016.
From Highway 51, take the Glendale exit east. Glendale becomes Lincoln. Turn left on East Squaw Peak Dr, and follow it to the end. There is plenty of parking, a few ramadas for shade, and a restroom.

Great views, lots of wildlife, variety of vegetation, good workout, sufficient parking, & easy to get to (not far off the 51).
