On a steep hill in Beverly Hills sits Greystone Mansion and its formal terraced gardens. You are allowed to enter the gardens for free, which are now owned by the city of Beverly Hills, and take a stroll. The top garden is a little barren-looking, with formal English hedges, fountains, and a fancy staircase. The next garden down is a rectangular lawn surrounded by hedges and roses and sandstone walls decorated with little engravings. The views over LA are great from here.
The next garden down has long rows of groomed trees and bunches of lavender. High sandstone walls with fountains add to the romance.
The last level takes you to some nude fountains, a stream, flowers, and the lovely grey Tudor Revival mansion itself.
It only takes about half an hour to explore the gardens of Greystone Mansion and its worth your time!
From Jan-July, one Sunday mid-month at 2pm there are concerts at the gardens, for $20 per person.
Greystone Mansion was built in 1928 and was a gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny to his son. The city purchased the estate in 1965 to keep the land from being subdivided and the mansion demolished . The mansion has featured in many films, such as The Big Lebowski, and music videos such as Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together." Its staircase will be familiar to film lovers.
If you need a park with a large playground, check out Roxbury Park nearby.
Greystone Mansion is located at 905 Loma Vista Dr, Beverly Hills CA 90210.
Entrance to the gardens is free.
The gardens are open 10-5 or 10-6 depending on the season.
