Starting at Wilderness Park, it's nice to walk down Knob Hill Avenue all the way to the beach! You pass many churches- the Scientology one has particularly interesting and colorful architecture- and attractive, affluent homes with BMWs in the driveways! Stop along the way at Alta Vista Park (via Julia Ave), where there's a small playground and a large field below a green hill.

Continue down Knob Hill Avenue, past stunning rows of tall California palms. The wealthy houses will turn to beachy apartments. I love the pale skin-pink lampposts here! Soon you will be treated to glimpses of the sea! Continue on and walk down stairs to the stunning beach below. To your left, enjoy wonderful views of Palos Verdes, a headland that reaches out into the sparkling sea, and Torrance Beach. To your right, there is a concrete pathway you can take below beachhouses but above the beach. Or, you can walk on the bike path/ boardwalk the runs all the way from Santa Monica Beach to Torrance Beach, atop the sand. Back up at the street, you can walk towards Torrance Beach along the wonderful Esplanade. More beautiful views await you with each step! If the beachy, colorful, sunny atmosphere here doesn't cheer you up, I don't know what will!
A fun place nearby for kids is Redondo Pier, which has nautically-themed decorations that are a delight, little shops, and an arcade place called Redondo Fun Factory. To the north, check out Hermosa Beach, a really cool beach area with cafes, a happening bike path scene, beach volleyball, a perfect beach and a clean pretty pier.

The Scientology Church, with tiny blue glass tiles that sparkle in the light. Kids will enjoy looking at these!

Alta Vista Park and it's pleasant position beneath a little hill.

The playground at Alta Vista Park.

You know you're in Southern California when you see rows of palms this tall and this happy!

And finally, you reach the sea!

Two choices for a walk- upper or lower level?

To your left, the boardwalk continues around the corner to Torrance Beach, with wonderful views of Palos Verdes all along the way!

To your right, the boardwalk continues all the way to Santa Monica. Lots of fun-loving people enjoy it, including this guy on his weird three-wheeled thing-a-majig, while others enjoy a game of beach volleyball.

Directions

Hopkins Wilderness Park is located at 1102 Camino Real, Redondo Beach CA 90277.
From Highway 1, go east on Torrance Blvd. Turn right immediately on Camino Real and then, after some driving, turn left on Knob Hill Avenue, into the Hopkins Wilderness Park parking lot. Take a look at the free Hopkins Wilderness Park with its pond and ducks, and then cross the street by foot and walk towards the beach on Knob Hill Avenue for a great stroll!
