NOTE: Currently only the short walk to the waterfall view is open, and you can only access this park from the north. More trails will be open in 2019 after this area is rebuilt.
You will never forget the beauty of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park after you leave. This beach, in the glorious Big Sur area, is a white sand beach with a waterfall that splashes onto the sand. The ocean here is stunning to behold with its bright blue-green hue. Walk the easy trail that hugs the coast, and look down on the paradise below. I could hardly take it in it was so wonderful!
Henry Miller called this area "a place of grandeur and eloquent silence." The drive along Highway 1 is spectacular all the way from San Simeon until you reach Monterey. It's a hair-raising, narrow, winding road, but well worth the hours of carsickness!
If you're hungry, stop along Highway 1 at Nepenthe Restaurant, where you can take in incredible views high high (808 feet) above the ocean. They have two beautiful terraces where you can eat outdoors, including Cafe Kevah on the lowest terrace, with fantastic views and more affordable prices.
From Highway 1, follow the signs to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. There is plenty of parking, and you pay $10 by honor system. Your receipt from other parking lots at Big Sur also counts.
Nepenthe Restaurant, 48510 California Highway One, Big Sur CA 93920, call (831) 667-2345.
