Monterey is lucky to have the Treasure Hunt pirate ride at Cannery Row. Here, you can bring your family to an animatronic theme park ride similar to a ride at Disneyland, minus the 20,000 people crowding you in and giving you Disney flu! It is a wonderful experience and I was really impressed.

The ride is located in the same plaza as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, on the waterfront along Cannery Row. You descend stairs below a pirate and his parrot to an elevator which is a themed waiting area with a live actor and an animatronic donkey. The ride itself is a ton of fun, in a ride vehicle that is smoother and nicer than most theme park rides. It takes you past gorgeous scenes with animatronics and treasure boxes, and you can shoot to earn points.
When you descend the stairs, you are going into real caverns. Monterey Bay is where Hyppolite Bouchard, a pirate who worked for Argentina, arrived with two ships, 360 men, 52 cannons, 130 guns, and 70 spears, in 1818. When his two ships were spotted off the coast, the Spanish townspeople of Monterey, and only 65 soldiers plus a few others that had been sent from various missions, prepared to fight back with cannons. Those who were unable to fight, including women and children, were sent inland to Soledad Mission to wait in safety. Bouchard and his men won the battle, raiding Monterey, and holding the town for six days. They captured the townspeople's cows, and burned the homes, governor's house, weapons headquarters, and fort. None of the townspeople were harmed luckily.
Bouchard was born in France and served in Napoleon's army!
The man holding the lantern in the elevator preshow is Molina, one of the townspeople, a drunk man who was really captured by Bouchard. It's fun to see him and his donkey, Don Pedro!

Directions

Treasure Hunt: The Ride is located at 700 Cannery Row, Monterey.
Open Fri-Sat 11-8, Sun-Tues 11-7. Closed Wed and Thurs.
Unlimited ride price is $19.99, with optional power-up token upgrade for $3.
Considering that I paid $150 to go to Epic Universe in Florida and only got to ride four rides (and watch two shows) from opening to closing because it was so crowded (I waited two hours for the Mario ride), I'd say this price is pretty good!
