In Santa Rosa NM, there is a deep blue swimming hole, a sinkhole, just in the middle of the town. The town is a very plain little roadside town, and the area where the blue hole is found is also plain- just a park with dry dead grass. Above the blue hole are rocks that people sometimes jump from (I always think this is too risky). There is an area fenced off with buoys where the spring bubbles up out of the underwater cavern and scuba divers hang out here- the buoys protect them from being jumped on by swimmers.

The water is clear and inky blue because it's so deep. It's also extremely cold- 62 degrees. The day we came it was windy and unpleasant- this might happen a lot since it's kind of an exposed spot. 3,000 gallons of water flow from this spring every minute, so the water is very clean! The day we visited there were about a dozen Polynesian people from a nearby town having a blast- it makes sense that they would seek out the only bluegreen water in this dry stark desert!
This swimming hole is very close to Highway 40 so it makes for a fun and unique stop on a cross-country road trip!
