Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is an interesting museum with art from different periods of Georgia O'Keeffe's life. It includes, of course, her most famous paintings, of desert flowers, blue skies, and sunbleached animal bones from her walks in New Mexico. She lived in New York with her husband, an art dealer, but spent winters in New Mexico, until her husband died and she moved permanently to New Mexico. In 2014, her Jimson Weed painting was sold to the Walmart heiress for $44 million, the highest priced painting by a female artist sold at auction. Juan Hamilton, a lover she met when she was 85, said of her: "A lot of the things that have been written about her diminish the importance of who she really was. She's emphasized as a woman painter, and she didn't want to be one of the best woman painters. She wanted to be one of the best painters."
Make sure you watch the fifteen minute video and read the timeline of her life that's displayed. At the front desk they give out art pads and good pencils for kids to draw- my daughter loved this and it made the museum relevant for her!
After, walk around Santa Fe admiring the little adobe homes with their colorful front doors and window trim. And don't miss out on Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
For more colorful museums, check out also Museum Hill, a lovely spot up high above the town.
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located at 217 Johnson St, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Open daily 10-5. Fridays open until 7pm. Entrance is $13 for adults, $11 for students, and free for children under 18 and for NM residents on the first Friday of each month (with ID).
