At the foot of Canal Street, you can stroll along the levee beside the brown Mississippi River, enjoying cool breezes off the water. There isn't any shade but there are great views of the Crescent City Bridge. This pedestrian promenade is called Moon Walk, and occasionally street musicians will entertain you as you walk along. You can walk to the French Quarter from here, crossing the slightly elevated flood barrier and the streetcar rails and parking lots. Without Moon Walk, the river would not be accessible from the French Quarter. Check out the steamboats going by, as well as cruise ships and huge container ships. Also, enjoy the many statues along this pleasant walkway. It's nice to have a picnic on top of the grassy hill that is Woldenberg Park. This is the setting for many of the city's festivals and also a prime viewing spot for the July 4 fireworks.
Audobon Aquarium is located on the Moon Walk. You can take a two-hour sightseeing or Jazz lunch cruise along the river on the Steamboat Natchez. The ticket office is on Toulouse Street behind Woldenberg Park.
Moon Walk extends for a mile from the foot of Canal street outside the Audobon Aquarium, north past Woldenberg Park, to the riverfront area in front of Jackson Square where the tourist office is located. In other words, Moon Walk is on the river from the foot of Canal Street to the foot of St. Philip St.
