The Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge is an incredible Gothic castle-like building that stands high on a bluff. The green grass all around it is vibrant. The Mississippi River is nearby.
The building is filled with mystery and beauty. In its over 150 years of history, it has seen political debate, war, fire, abandonment followed by wild teen parties, and scandal. The best way to get a feeling for the history around the building is to watch the Ghost of the Castle movie. Usually this is not my kind of thing but in this case it was wonderful! What an unusual spectacle- don't miss it!
It's also wonderful to just stroll around, admiring the stunning staircase and banisters, the kaleidoscope stained glass ceiling, and the regal ballroom. What a beautiful place! If you can only visit one thing in Baton Rouge, this must be it!
There is a huge modern sculpture that is quite awe-inspiring at the east side of the building, in Galvez Plaza.
Walk over to Strands Cafe, a counter-service European-style patisserie, for a delicious breakfast or lunch.
