Airlie Gardens, on the way to Wrightsville Beach from Wilmington, is a gorgeous place to stop for a stroll. Shady, wide, paved walkways take you past huge old trees strung with Spanish moss. Strong breezes off the water cool you down, and make the Spanish moss wave in the wind. What joy!

In spring hundreds of flowers bloom, adding color to the shady walkways.
There is a small butterfly pavilion, and a cute sculpture of a frog with a net. Best of all, there's a chapel made of glass bottles. It is so beautiful when it catches the light, and you must walk around it many times seeing all the different angles. Kids love to see the glass bottle chapel.
A large pond in the middle of the gardens has some docks where you can stand by the water and look out for ducks and a swan.
For a snack after your walk, sit under the pretty trees at Lumina Station shopping plaza and have a snack at Sweet and Savory Cafe.
