Carolina Beach is a fun town with cute pastel-colored beach houses. There are ice cream shops galore and even an amusement park on the boardwalk! Come walk around and get that summertime feeling! Pure joy!
The water at the beach has a beautiful blue-green hue, but is not crystal clear. Build some castles in the abundant sand. Cabbage palms make for a tropical feel as you walk the streets and park at the beach access areas.
There is a carousel, cotton candy stand, arcade games, ferris wheel, ring of fire, fun slides (these are sketchy as they can burn your skin if you don't sit properly on the sack), and spinning rides at the amusement park.
At the boardwalk, there are swinging benchs where you can sit with your loved one and watch the blue sea, plus gazebos for shade. Some nights you can see fireworks! This usually takes place Thursdays from the end of May to the end of August- music at 6:30pm and fireworks at 9pm. The first and last are on a Friday though (5/25/18 and 8/31/18).
Make sure you have a waffle cone at Squiggley's Ice Cream, an adorable ice cream shop with pink railing and fun decorations. The ice cream is delicious because it's creamy and not too sweet- it doesn't make you feel sick at all. And the cones are baked fresh.
Carolina Beach Boardwalk has a bit of a Myrtle Beach feel, slightly tacky. Some of the bars on the boardwalk have some really unsavory types hanging out at front, eyeing girls walking by.
We ate at SeaWitch Cafe, which had a nice outdoor courtyard with cabbage palms, but no water views as its name implied. The food was typical bar food, not good quality. There were plenty of restaurants along the boardwalk with an ocean view, but they had no shade at their outdoor seating.
Kure Beach is the next beach south of Carolina Beach and has a more upmarket feel.
Make sure you visit North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, a top-notch aquarium. And walk the grounds of Fort Fisher Historic Site, which are so magical! The 1921 Fort Fisher Monument is also a nice spot, on the ocean, with huge rocks at the sea wall, and an amazing maritime forest of twisty trees.
Carolina Beach has a pier at the north end and plenty of beach access points to the south.
Squiggley's Ice Cream, 208 S Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach, NC 28428. Cash only.
The amusement park is located at 100 Cape Fear Blvd, Carolina Beach, NC 28428.
