Wilmington has a wonderful downtown area on the river. It's everything you could want in a place to stroll around on a warm evening. The main street, Front Street, has gorgeous historic storefronts from the late 19th century. A youthful vibe fills the street as some students as well as visitors pack the coffee houses and sidewalk cafes.
A block from Front Street, the Riverwalk is a glorious spot to stroll. Here a cool breeze makes for a perfect temperature. A long wooden boardwalk leads past cafes with live music. Jugglers and other performers can be found at the end of Market Street on the boardwalk. It looks like the boardwalk ends here, but continue south to find the best part of the boardwalk, including the waterfront cafes.
From Front Street, walk east on Market Street to check out Wilmington's gorgeous mansions and churches, taking side streets to find more mansions. There is an abundance of pretty sights on the tree-lined streets.
Kids enjoy the large Children's Museum of Wilmington. Another fun place for kids is Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, which has lots of hands-on activities.
For incredible gardens with a cool breeze, check out Airlie Gardens, a twenty minute drive from Wilmington's Front Street area, on the way to Wrightsville Beach.
The main street in downtown Wilmington is Front Street, where it meets Market Street.
The most festive area of the Riverwalk, where there are jugglers and street performers, is at Market Street and Water Street. And the restaurants are south of there, on the Riverwalk, hidden at first, but just keep walking south!
