Wrightsville Beach is a popular beach with a pier where people go fishing. The beach is a wide expanse of slightly mucky sand, backed by fairly plain beach houses. The water is not clear but it is a pretty blue-green color. From a distance the water looks very bright and turquoise. It was slightly hazy when I was there.

Fairly large waves make for some nice bouncy swimming. Lots of families with kids gather on weekends so there will always be kids to play with. Bring big shovels and lots of sand toys, for hours of fun!
The side streets that lead to the beach also lead to the intracoastal waterway, so you can walk from the beach on one of the streets to the intracoastal very quickly. You can also walk the beach all the way south where it curves around and becomes an intracoastal beach. There is a long jetty at the south end of the beach.
Shell collecting is not the greatest at this beach but there are some broken shells here and there, and an occasional huge perfect shell.
If you walk along the beach north of the pier you will come to Holiday Inn. Here you can eat inside with a gorgeous ocean view, or on a balcony with the same view, at Oceans Restaurant, which has good and reasonably priced food, and friendly staff. The sun rises over this beach so it's lovely to come for breakfast.
If coming from inland, stop at Lumina Station, a small shopping plaza, on the way to the beach to get a snack at one of the cafes.
For a more narrow beach with brightly colored beach houses and slightly better shells, check out Kure Beach. For lots of ice cream shops and an amusement park on a boardwalk, check out Carolina Beach. A top-notch aquarium can be found 45 minutes south at Fort Fisher.
For a college town scene, eat dinner at Front Street in Wilmington, or one block from Front Street on the Riverwalk
For incredible gardens with a cool breeze, check out Airlie Gardens, a nine minute drive from Wrightsville Beach.
