Makaha Beach is a popular beach with wonderful yellow sand. Here you can swim in fairly calm waters in the summer, or watch the surfers very close to shore in the winter. There can be strong currents and very large waves so be careful. There is a condo building on the north end of the beach, and some shade under trees and a lifeguard stand nearby. It's nice that there's a lifeguard at this beach so you feel a little safer in the water and you can try to park your car along Farrington Highway near the lifeguard stand and hope that it's safer too. Don't leave any valuables in your car or on the beach.

There is a scuba spot called Makaha Caverns off shore, so you sometimes see boat companies taking divers out.
For a truly stunning beach in the countryside with mountains looming above it, check out Makua Beach, an eight minute drive north.
