It's fun to hike along an old, abandoned highway and see the road signs and barriers overgrown with vines! You could even shoot a movie here using the road signs! Because the Pupukea Road Trail is paved, it's great for people who don't like mud. Wear long pants and spray your ankles with lemon eucalyptus oil because there are mosquitoes. There are some side trails, with panoramic views over the North Shore, that shoot off from the road. The abandoned military road is called Paalaa Uka Pupukea Road (you can see it on google maps). The forest is called Pupukea-Paumalu Forest Reserve, and allows hunting.
The beginning of the trail is a wide dirt road, making this trail not the best for strollers. For a stroller-friendly but expensive hike, visit Waimea Valley, a tourist attraction which is basically a hike.
The Pupukea Road Trail begins on your right when you reach the end of Pupukea Road and can go no further because the Boy Scout Camp is straight ahead. There is a sign at the gate of the trail (a short walk from the road) that says "WARNING..."
The drive up to the trailhead is half the fun. The road is bordered with beautiful trees and cute houses, and you get an ocean view on the return drive.
At the foot of Pupukea Road there is a Foodland market where you can get some deli foods for a picnic and buy souvenirs and Locals slippers (flip flops). There is no restroom in the market (this makes me so mad!) but there is a public restroom at Pupukea Beach Park Parking, across Kamehameha Highway.
After your hike, go for a swim at Three Tables Beach or Shark's Cove.
For a different, more touristy and far more expensive hike, visit Waimea Valley botanical garden to walk to a waterfall past flowers and beautiful old trees.
While on the North Shore, head toward the mountains on Pupukea Road (the road is between Three Tables Beach and Shark's Cove, at the Foodland market). When you reach the end of the road (at the Boy's Scout Camp), the trail is on your right. Park your car along the road outside the camp, and don't leave any valuables in the car.
The address of the Boy Scout Camp is 59-780 Pupukea Road, Haleiwa HI 96712.
