Newport Beach Boardwalk is definitely outdated and takes you back a few decades! It's still fun to walk around the shops at the Balboa Fun Zone, ride the ferris wheel (which has lovely views of the harbor and goes for a long time), and watch your kids ride the carousel. The beach boardwalk is sandwiched between interesting beachhouses on one side and the gigantically wide beach on the other, and leads to Balboa Pier. The nicest part of this area is the pathway on the other side, that fronts the harbor. Here you pass plenty of flowering gardens, little beaches on the water (slightly polluted sand though), and docks. It makes for a peaceful stroll and is much prettier than the wide-open beach boardwalk.
Balboa Fun Zone is located at 600 East Bay Ave, Balboa CA 92661. From Pacific Coast Hwy, turn toward the ocean on Balboa Blvd. After one mile, you can park in the municipal lot near Balboa Pier. Balboa Fun Zone is open Sun-Thurs 11-8, Fri and Sat 11-10. Ferris wheel is $3 a ride.
