French Park, or EA French Park, is a pretty park near San Luis Obispo airport. Its most popular feature is its pickleball court, in a nice location at the top of the hill! There is a baseball diamond with a large field where people play fetch with their dogs. The park is hilly, and at the top of one hill are lots of trees and shade, where you could have a picnic with mountain views. Paths wind around the park, past a basketball court and tennis courts. There is a playground with swings, but it has no shade.

A nice 1.7 mile loop walk you can do is to park your car along Poinsettia Street at Tank Farm Rd (4044 Poinsettia Street). Walk on the sidewalk along Poinsettia Street past a eucalyptus grove. Then walk up the hill in EA French Park. At 1071 Fuller Road, take the dedicated walking path behind houses. Continue on Poinsettia Street all the way to the dead end of Snapdragon Way. Then turn around and take Snapdragon Way, Goldenrod Lane, and Larkspur Street. Cross Fuller Street and you will find another dedicated walking path, at 933 Fuller Rd. It leads between houses, past flower plantings, and through the eucalyptus grove. Turn left on Poinsettia Street and you will be back at your car. See map in the photos below.
You can also go north on the 4569 Poinsettia Street path to stairs that connect up with the Islay Park Greenway. If you combine all the paths you can walk five miles, with no cars beside you! Most of the walk is fairly flat, so it's easier on your knees than the many hikes in SLO that go to the top of a peak.
After, you can have a delicious blueberry muffin and cup of tea at House of Bread on Farmhouse Lane, a large counter-service cafe, while looking out the windows at the planes flying out of the airport. Part of the same company is Farmhouse Corner Market (closed Mondays), with wine tasting and food. They have live music most Fridays 6-8pm- check their website.
Another fairly flat hike is the Poly Canyon Hike.
