On the way to Spooner's Cove in Montana de Oro State Park there is a little trail called Hazard Reef Trail. It starts at a large dirt parking lot on the right of the road. There, a dirt path takes you down down down for 0.3 miles until you reach the rocky shale coastline with tide pools and the chance of seeing starfish (come at low tide). You pass a wonderful eucalyptus forest on your right as you walk down. There are log steps in the dirt. Come when it has not rained at all, otherwise the trail is blocked by muddy parts with stepping stones- you might not want to balance over the mud! This area can be flooded most of the time, so the trail is not the best in that way. Although the path is downhill the whole way, it never gets steeper than 11% grade.
After, check out Spooner's Cove, and then do the Bluff Trail, which is more manageable and follows the cliffs with gorgeous views over the water.

We turned around at this muddy spot, and never got to see the coastline!

On the drive there, you can pull over at a lookout. We saw people horse riding!
