James Way Oak Habitat Preserve Trail, or James Way Park Trail, takes you along a narrow dirt path under twisted oak trees parallel to the road. The path is loose dirt, and runs for less than a mile. There are no views except from the short uphill detour. In spring you can see flowers, and sometimes there are deer. If you live nearby, it's worth coming here since it is shady.
After, explore Arroyo Grande Village, which as a main street, Branch Street, with an attractive bookstore, plus a coffee shop and ice cream shop. You can walk to Heritage Square Park from there and play on the small playground, in a lovely cool breeze.
If you miss Hawaii, drive four minutes south to Red Dirt Coffee House (closed Mondays) to buy spam musubis, delicious butter mochi, aloha wear, and locals slippers. On Fridays at 10:30-12:30, sit outside under a yellow umbrella and listen to the Hula Cove Ukulele Singers as they practise their upbeat tunes.
Park along the road at 689 James Way, Arroyo Grande CA.
