The 2.2 mile Lemon Grove Loop Trail is pleasant because of the wide open spaces all around you. You can walk the loop, or have the choice of other trails once you've walked a little while. One of the trails (left at the fork) goes to the top of Cerro San Luis mountain, the one with an M on it. We just walked Lemon Grove Loop and it was a bucolic scene. There are a few trees here and there, views of open countryside plus part of the town, flowering cactus plants, and wildflowers. You might see horses or cows from the trail. In summer and fall, this area is incredibly dry and yellow-brown. In winter it can be closed because of mud- check the trail status on the city of SLO website. In spring, it is green!
Afterward, have a treat at nearby House of Bread in downtown SLO.
You will also enjoy the most popular trail in SLO: Bishop Peak.
Lemon Grove Loop Trail starts at 1183 Fernandez Rd, SLO CA 93401, which is in a funny spot between two freeways. There is a dirt parking lot.

Plenty of parking and well maintained trails to Bishop Peak. Wear decent hiking shoes as the paths are a bit difficult. Worth a visit!
