Pismo Preserve has several hikes up the mountain opposite the sea in Pismo Beach. There are fantastic ocean and pier views. A little stream crosses the path at one point, making bubbling sounds. In spring, there are wildflowers. The scrub is low and there is no shade, so bring a hat.
This hike sounds idyllic but it has a few problems. First of all, there is limited parking. You have to stop near the beginning of the parking lot and wait for someone to leave. Once on the trail, there are many bikes trying to pass you on a very narrow path with no room for two! The Discovery trail (yellow on the map) has the most bikes. Lastly, the freeway noise takes away from the peaceful nature experience that you seek on a hike. It's a shame because the views are great.
For a more quiet hike, check out Smuggler's Cave.
Pismo Preserve is located at 80 Mattie Rd, Pismo Beach, CA 93449. There is a parking lot that is always full, even on cold cloudy days, so you must wait for someone to leave.
