My favorite farmers market is the one on Saturday mornings (8:30-1) on the corner of Santa Barbara Street and Cota Street. The Spanish architecture around that area adds to the delight and the market is a little more mellow than the State Street one. The music is great too. Around every corner you hear a new great sound! Bright smiling faces fill the market and people stop to ask the vendors about how to prepare certain veggies. The farmers also offer samples of the latest in-season fruits. You must try the Cherimoya- wow!
The atmosphere overall is just perfect! Kids enjoy buying a balloon bent into the shape of an animal or heart or sword. The balloon man comes to all the farmers markets. Some of the things you will find are fruits, vegetables, local honey, flowers, cheeses, grass-fed beef, and hummus. Enjoy!
While here, you must not miss taking a peek at the Spanish townhouses on East Cota Street.
Other farmers markets:
The State Street Farmers Market is a gorgeous one, though it is in an area with a lot of homeless people. Here you can stroll in the shade of trees, and see the most delicious fruit and vegetables. There are plenty of musicians and lots of happy people. Times are 3-6:30pm in winter and 4-7:30pm in summer on Tuesdays at the 500 and 600 blocks of State Street.
The Goleta Camino Real farmers market has a lot of families, who stop at Anna's Bakery for a pastry with their kids and then pick up some veggies and fruits to take home. It's on Sundays from 10-2pm.
