NOTE: This trail was burned during the Thomas fire and is closed for winter 2018.
Enjoy a beautiful drive past houses you wish you owned and stunning mountain and ocean views. After ten minutes you arrive at the trailhead for the Romero Canyon Trail. In spring, a stream runs over the road and you can hear it's lovely bubbling. The trail is very steep the whole way so kids will whine a little and you will suffer if you have sensitive knees. It is hard-packed dirt with lots of little rocks jutting out. There is a cute pointed mountain straight ahead of you. At one point you cross the stream, which is fun. After twenty minutes you have the choice of Romero Canyon Trail or Old Romero Road. We took the latter, which is a wide fire road. It offers great views of the ocean and three oil platforms, plus views over the valley way below. Butterflies love it up here, and there are little yellow flowers, tall grasses, and dandelions. This is a nice hike because there isn't much poison ivy to worry about- kids appreciate that.
After your hike, drive down to cute Summerland town and have an iced tea at Red Kettle Coffee on the mini red picnic tables in front. Joy!
Romero Canyon Trail is located way in the back of Summerland. For your GPS, use this address: 2647 Bella Vista Rd, Montecito CA 93108. Once you see the stream crossing the road, you can park along the road. The trailhead is right there, at a rusty metal fence.
