Savannas Preserve State Park has many different entrances and trails in Jensen Beach and Port St Lucie. We went to the main, north entrance with the environmental education center building. The environmental center was being renovated. We followed the ranger's instructions and took the Canoe Launch Rd to the end. Here you will find a dock on a lake. There are many water lilies, more than you usually see in one place, and wide open expanses that are lovely. We also saw two sandhill cranes, standing very close to the shady gazebo, so we could watch them for a long time. We then hiked the White Trail. It is a wide, shadeless trail on grass and dirt. There are two large wooden bridges over swampy areas. It is a very plain walk! One hiker who passed us even commented, "I was hoping to see a Florida panther or something!" Well, we saw nothing too! This trail would be torture in summer because it as already very hot in winter.
There are nicer spots to go for a walk, such as Indian Riverside Park.
Savannas Preserve State Park main entrance is located at 2541 SE Walton Rd, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952. Entry is $3 cash.
