It's cool and lush along the San Antonio River Walk, one storey below street level. Here a walkway winds around incredible tropical trees like you've never seen before. Cafes line the walkway. The scenery is magic, as is the feeling that you are below street level in a special world. But the amount of people takes away from the magic. There are hoards of tourists, and as always in touristy places, low quality food. This area would be lovely when the crowds are gone, so plan to take a stroll at less popular times. For somewhere less touristy to eat, try the Pearl District. For a tranquil stroll without people, check out the beautiful sunken Japanese Tea Garden.
To read, with your kids, about how Mexican American singer Lydia Mendoza played in the little squares in San Antonio, check out Tejano Music Queen - it always enriches your travels to have a magical story in the back of your mind as you see a location.
