In the late afternoon, when golden sunlight hits the colorful storefronts, Honomu town has a magical feeling. It is situated amid beautiful countryside with long grasses, cute fruit stands, and views of the blue sea. Stop here on your way back from Akaka Falls. You can have a coffee or snack at The Hive (closed Mon), or a meal at Big Island Birria Boss, a good Mexican cafe further downhill. Browse the gift and antique shops, and take photos of adorable Holy Ascension Orthodox Church with its gold dome cross atop. Honomu Hongwanji Buddhist Temple has a plainer chapel but with a silver dome, uphill from its main building. Good Shepherd Catholic Church is at the top of the street, with a sweet chapel and stained glass windows. Its statues in the garden are lovely, with Mary in a grotto looking skyward. There are no sidewalks on Old Mamalahoa Highway, which makes it a bit dangerous at this main strip, with all the tourists driving by.
The main strip of Honomu town is located at 28-1672 Old Mamalahoa Hwy, Honomu, HI 96728.
