It's a pleasant drive down Highway 1 to Bodega Bay. Take the detour to the town of Bodega and see the Bodega Schoolhouse that was featured in Hitchcock's "The Birds." Then head back to Highway 1 and Bodega Bay, a town famous for its fresh seafood. You can stroll along its anchorage and enjoy the best seafood soup you've ever tasted at The Tides Wharf Restaurant. This restaurant is famous because it was used for the cafe and boat dock scenes in Hitchcock's film, though it has been remodeled since then. It's a lovely place to eat because every table has bay views.
To walk on the beach beside the bay, take Doran Park Rd and then Doran Beach Rd to the end. This 2-mile stretch of windy beach is good for a wild stroll. There's a jetty at the harbor mouth where you can walk along the rocks.
If you're heading north up Highway 1, after about 15 miles, check out wonderful Whale Point and Goat Beach, for a great stormy beach scene. You will see signs and turn into Goat Rock Rd on your left from Highway 1.
Further up Highway 1, before you reach a large concrete bridge where the Russian River meets the sea, if you're hungry, try the yummy Russian House #1 Restaurant, which has spectacular views over the deep blue rivermouth- it's one of the most beautiful restaurants I've ever been to!
While you're here, drive a minute north on Highway 1 and peer down at the seal rookery below. It's a lovely wild area.
The Tides Wharf Restaurant is located at 835 Hwy 1, Bodega Bay 94923, on the bay side of Highway 1, just south of Harbour Way, call (707) 875-3652.
Doran Beach Park: Take Doran Park Rd and then Doran Beach Rd to the end. The address is 201 Doran Beach Rd, Bodega Bay CA 94923. It costs $7 per car to enter. There are restrooms.
