Just 7 miles inland from Bodega Bay is the small town of Bodega. Here, just up the hill from the corner where St Teresa's Church stands, is the schoolhouse where "The Birds" was filmed. The schoolhouse was built in 1873 of virgin redwood. The playground in the back, that you see in The Birds, never existed but was added later in Hollywood. The house is said to be haunted by the school's first teacher and his daughter.
If you're heading back to Highway 1 and going north, after about 15 miles driving the coast, check out wonderful Whale Point and Goat Beach, for a great stormy beach scene. You will see signs and turn into Goat Rock Rd on your left from Highway 1.
Further up Highway 1, before you reach a large concrete bridge where the Russian River meets the sea, if you're hungry, you have to try the yummy Russian House #1 Restaurant, which has spectacular views over the deep blue rivermouth- it's one of the best restaurants I've ever been to!
While you're here, drive a minute north on Highway 1 and peer down at the seal rookery below. It's a lovely wild area.
Bodega Schoolhouse, also called Potter Schoolhouse, is located at 17110 Bodega Lane, Bodega CA 94922.
From Highway 1, turn onto Bodega Hwy and you will be in the town of Bodega.
