Bishop, in the Eastern Sierras, is a small roadside town that is a nice place to stop on your way to Mammoth. It has a bookstore, Spellbinder Books, with a kids section and a couch where kids can read. Inside the bookstore is a little cafe. There is a modern frozen yogurt place, Good Earth Yogurt, with very stylish decor. The frozen yogurt is certified organic from grass-fed cows and with live active cultures. There is a coffee shop called Looney Bean Coffee, with a cute front patio. Pots full of colorful flowers line the highway.
Erick Schat's Bakkery, in a cute building, is a great place to pick up some delicious bread.
One of the most beautiful hikes you can do, near Bishop, is to Gem Lake. The color of the water is just amazing!
20 minutes south and another 22 minutes west, go for a hike you will always remember at Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail, a gorgeous place under towering pines and soaring mountain views!
To check out a fish hatchery that is still working, and feed the fish, check out Fish Springs Hatchery, 22 mins south.
Also nice for a stop 38 minutes south of here is Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, which no longer has fish but transports you to Austria or Germany with its glorious building backed by the amazing mountains. Kids can see ducks in the pond.
45 minutes south, check out the Eastern California Museum, a humble museum that makes everyone in the family happy with its interesting, diverse exhibits.
Another good stop two hours south of here is Indian Wells Brewing Company where you can try unusual flavors of soda and see quirky roadside attractions like a skeleton driving a truck.
