Lone Pine is a cute roadside town with glorious views of the Eastern Sierra mountains. It's a nice place to stop on the way to Mammoth. You can check out the Lone Pine Film History Museum, especially fun for those who love westerns. Many Hollywood films were filmed nearby in the Alabama Hills, which is a gorgeous spot to hike. These were mostly westerns, such as those featuring John Wayne, but there have also been Sci-Fi movies such as Star Trek V. Alabama Hills Cafe (breakfast and lunch only) has good food and pictures of the films on the walls. It is a cafe with wait service, not counter service, so it can take a while. At dinnertime, it's nice to go to Seasons and eat at the bar, where you'll meet the local people. Go to the Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center to gather information on the area and read about the Los Angeles Aqueduct. They have a great bookstore and nice souvenirs for sale, plus clean restrooms and cool AC. You can gain some local knowledge on the trails here.
Walking around Lone Pine, you really feel like you're in the wild west, with the cute wooden architecture everywhere.
18 minutes north, check out the Manzanar Visitor Center to learn about the Japanese who were brought to this internment camp during World War II.
A nice roadside town with a bakery, frozen yogurt place, bookstore, and coffee shop is Bishop, an hour north of here.
40 minutes north and another 22 minutes west, go for a hike you will always remember at Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail, a gorgeous place under towering pines and soaring mountain views!
Also nice for a stop 20 minutes north of here is Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, which no longer has fish but transports you to Austria or Germany with its glorious building backed by the amazing mountains. Kids can see ducks in the pond.
17 minutes north, check out the Eastern California Museum, a humble museum that makes everyone in the family happy with its interesting, diverse exhibits.
Another good stop one hour south of here is Indian Wells Brewing Company where you can try unusual flavors of soda and see quirky roadside attractions like a skeleton driving a truck.
A fascinating place to visit is Death Valley, one and a half hours drive from here.
